Senator Johnathan Dayton son of Elias Dayton born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey October 16, 1760. Easily made paymaster for the milita with his father Major General. This started his long career of service to his country. In 1787 he was elected a member of the Constitutional Convention. In 1791 he was elected for his first term in congress. In 1795 he was made Speaker of the House and served as 4th and 5th Speaker of the House. In 1798 he earned a LLD from Princeton University. In 1799 he quit the House to run for Senator and served in that position until his retirement in 1805. As one of the most influential men of his day he was constantly requested to give support to those seeking it for many causes even Aron Burr the traitor. In 1807 Johnathon was arrested for conspiracy but was never convicted. This must of caused him much pain because he never is found in history again and he died October 9, 1824. interment in a vault in St. John’s Churchyard; the city of Dayton, Ohio, was named for him. Another group of Revolutionary War veterans founded the city of Dayton in the Ohio Territory in 1796. Their pioneer spirit has marked Dayton's history. It has been a city of bold and successful experiments. Dayton straddles the Great Miami River, in southwestern Ohio, at the point where it is joined by the Mad and the Stillwater rivers. In 1913 the three rivers, swollen by heavy rains, flooded the city, causing great losses of life and property. In Dayton Wilbur and Orville Wright built the planes they used for their first flights, and Orville's home has been preserved by the city. Their experimental field is now part of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, headquarters of the Air Force Logistics Command and site of the Air Force Museum. The Defense Department's Institute of Security Assistance Management is here. In Dayton are an art institute, the University of Dayton, Wright State University, United Theological Seminary, and the home of the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dayton is an industrial, trade, and aviation center. The manufacture of machine tools and electrical equipment are leading industries. Printing, the making of auto parts, refrigerators, air conditioners, computers, rubber, putty, and plastics are also important. The city was named for Jonathan Dayton, one of its early promoters. It became the Montgomery County seat in 1803 and was chartered as a city in 1841. In 1913 it adopted the city-manager form of government. Population (1980 census), 203,371. I am still working to find the father of George Nelson in his obituary it is stated that “he was a descendant of Jonathan Dayton founder of Dayton Ohio”. Jonathan Dayton was married and had two daughters. So while I originally thought he was a grandfather he must have been a grand uncle. ?
